The general objective of the Food Quality Control Program is to ensure that food provided to the public meet required standards, and are safe for human consumption. Activities under this program include food sampling, inspection and evaluation of food premises, health education, training and enforcement of legislation pertaining to the manufacture, storage and distribution of food. A food laboratory has been established in Kuching to facilitate the testing of food samples to ensure that they comply with the microbiological and chemical specifications in the Food Regulations, 1985. The Sarawak Health Department collaborates with several agencies including local authorities, Chemistry Department, Agriculture Department and Education Department to strengthen its food quality control activities.

Objective : To protect the public against health hazard and fraud in the preparation, sale and use of food.

Mission : To ensure food safety and uphold the nation’s integrity in food quality through shared responsibility and accountability on the basis of effective multipartite management system towards Vision 2020.

1. Food Safety Education For Secondary Schools

The Industry & Education Unit of Food Safety & Quality has launched its first Food Safety Education Program titled “Pendidikan Keselamatan Makanan Bagi Pelajar Sekolah” aimed at secondary school students, in collaboration with the Education Department. This program provides students with fascinating, little-known food safety facts in a student-friendly module. The pilot project was launched on 13 th October 2006 with Kolej Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Abdillah being the first school in Kuching to participate in this program.S.M.K. Muara Tuang was also privileged to being chosen by the Education Department to be a part of the program. Food Safety & Quality Unit is set to organize this program in more schools in Kuching following further discussions with the Education Department.

Program objectives:

To inculcate awareness among students of their responsibility in food safety both at home or at school.

To provide students with food safety information through simple concepts and emphasizes on the importance of food safety practices in the prevention of food-borne illnesses.

Encourages students to analyze and interpret issues related to food safety thus empowering them as smart consumers.

Future Plans:

To organize the program in more schools in Kuching and other divisions in Sarawak as well as schools in rural areas.

To incorporate food safety education in the existing secondary school curriculum. This unit has proposed to the Education Department to include food safety information in the Physical & Health Education curriculum.

To enhance the education and promotion materials for the Food Safety Education Program.

To design more challenging hands-on, minds-on activities that link food science and food safety to students' everyday lives.

Food Safety and Quality Unit's first ever public exhibition was held on 1-2 February 2007 at the Pustaka Negeri Sarawak
