Introduction

Recruitment of dispensers started as early as 1950. This was necessary to address the situation of experienced Hospital Attendant dispensing in many of the hospital dispensary and clinics. But in its formative years, there was an acute shortage of dispensers. Realising such condition, recruitment of dispensers was done at an increasing rate annually.

Their roles and responsibilies have evolves over the years. With the increasing and much improved technologies and advances in the health profession, currently, pharmacy assistant are required to be vastly equipped with knowledge and skills. Their roles have surpassed those of yesteryears where they were merely confined to compounding and mixing medicine. Now they are communicators, they are able to prepare and label medicine accurately, manage inventory, assist pharmacist in dispensing and with the newly opened building in Sarawak General Hospital, they also assist in specialised units such as therapeutic drug monitoring, total parental nutrition and cytotoxic drug reconstitution.

Career Prospects

Upon completion of the course, graduates would be employed as Pharmacy Assistants in the

  • Ministry Of Health: Hospital, health clinics, enforcement (Pharmacy)
  • Private Healthcare

G. Conditions for appoinment:

  • Diploma of Pharmacy Assistant from a Ministry of Health Pharmacy School which is certified by the Government or its equivalent [Salary commences on Grade U29: P1T6 RM1493.44]; and
  • Diploma in Pharmacy which is recognised by the Government from Institutions of higher education in Malaysia or its equivalent [Salary commences on Grade U29: P1T6 RM1493.44]; and
  • Pass in Bahasa Malaysia (including a pass in the the Oral Examination) at the SPM level or its equivalent, approved and recognised by the Government.

Job Description

  • Prepare and label name of medicine
  • Stock management
  • Dispensing and counselling
  • Assisting Pharmacist in Therapeutic Drug Monitoring, Total Parenteral Nutrition and cytotoxic drug reconstituition.

From time-to-time the Ministry of Health Malaysia, and other relevant agencies, would hold short and long-term in-service courses aimed at upgrading and strengthening knowledge and skills in the field of Pharmacy and other related fields.
