Welcome messages

Sarawak has seen remarkable progress and achievement in its Maternal and Child health services over the past two decades. This has been attributed to good policies, excellent planning, sufficient resources, appropriate technology and a host of other factors. However we cannot ignore the contributions of our staff, in particular, the public health nurses. Many public health nurses, midwives, community nurses and registered nurses, work in areas devoid of basic utilities such as electricity and safe water supply. Against all odds their dedication and persistence paid off. There is no lack of interesting anecdotes on the experiences of our public health nurses who worked among the communities in remote corners of Sarawak. Some of these anecdotes can be considered as stuff of legend.

Our public health nurses have a lot to share with the rest of the world. The best way to do that is through this conference. The Nursing Section has been entrusted with organizing this conference. I can assure you that the whole department is behind the organizers. You can expect a well organized conference. So there is no reason for you not to attend this conference.

Sincerely
Dr. Zulkifli Jantan

Greetings from Deputy Director of Health (Public Health)

I concur with my director that our public health nurses have been largely responsible for the excellent maternal and child health services in Sarawak. They have a relatively long history in the state. They were already around even before a full pledged medical and health care service was established. They have come a long way from the days when they have to cycle or even walk to attend to mothers in labour at home.

Our public health nurses have learnt a lot through doing things. However, what they have learnt need to be shared with the others and at the same time they need to learn what others are doing too. They need to be exposed to the latest knowledge and practices in public health nursing. This conference, which I consider long overdue, can serve that purpose.

The organising committee has planned an exciting programme for you. I am sure you will benefit a lot from this conference. Beside the conference you will be able to enjoy the beautiful and Healthy City of Kuching which has a lot to offer everyone.

Sincerely
Dr. Jamilah Hashim

Greetings from the Conference Chair

On behalf of the organizing committee and Sarawak Health Department it is with great pleasure and excitement that I invite you to the Public Health Nursing Conference 2011, to be held in Kuching between 11 and 13 March 2011.

Organising a conference of this scale is definitely a daunting task. With the support of our Director and many others we have managed to get things done smoothly. We have an exciting programme lined up for you and you will get to hear from the plenary speakers who are experts in their field. There isn’t a better time to talk about community participation and health promotion which is the gist of our conference’s theme than at this conference. Our plenary speakers will discuss in great depth on the theme: Enhancing community participation: Partnership in health promotion. You will also have rich choices of relevant public health topics which will be delivered by panel of speakers in special symposia sessions. We are also offering you the opportunity to present papers (the details will be available later through this webpage).

So remember the date and put it in your calendar and book your flight now. Bring your family along too. There are new attractions for your accompanying persons to visit while you attend the conference.

I promise you that the Public Health Nursing Conference 2011 will be a great event to be at and I look forward to seeing you in Kuching in March 2011.

Sincerely
Margareth Wong Ai Yung
