INTRODUCTION

Dietetics and Food Service Department (JDS) is among the main support services in Miri Hospital. The department’s operations building is part of the hospital main building which was built as a ‘nucleus concept’ in 1995. JDS is responsible for providing clinical dietetics services, preparation of patients’ diet and promoting healthy diet as an assistive treatment for patients in accordance to the hospital’s as well as the Ministry of Health’s vision and mission. Miri Hospital is the main specialist hospital in the northern zone of Sarawak with a total of 677 beds.

SCOPE OF SERVICES

i. To purchase, receive, store, process and ensure the quality control of goods.
ii. Prepare and cook meals for inpatients, OT paramedics and doctors on call.
iii. Provision of food rations and special products for inpatients.
iv. Provision of dietary counseling, clinical dietetics and dietary education.
v. Ensure that the Dietetics and Food Service Department operates from 0500hrs to 1900hrs daily for food/meals preparation.
vi. To monitor the hospital canteen, convenience store, vending machines and related facilities.

MISSION

Dietetics Service:
To support medical treatment through clinical dietetic services and health promotion based on evidence-based practice, while contributing our expertise in the field as well to studies and research on nutrition and dietetics.

Food Service:
Planning diet preparation to meet nutrient requirements, food service procedures, principles of hygiene and food safety, in line with current technology and high quality standards, as well as implementing management systems effectively in accordance with established policies, circulars and directives.

OBJECTIVE

General Objectives
To ensure that food services, clinical dietetic services, and health promotion are carried out profesionally and of high quality, while prioritising clients.

Specific Objectives
– To ensure that normal diet and therapeutic diet are supplied according to ward orders for first, second and third class, as well as for the children’s ward.

– To ensure that medical nutrition therapy for oral diets and nutrition support is provided to patients referred by medical officers.

– To provide practical catering training to trainees from institutions of higher learning.

– To encourage involvement in catering research as well as clinical / community dietetics research according to needs towards the improvement of service quality.

CLIENT’S CHARTER

Dietetics Service
1. To ensure that clinical dietetic services for patients referred by specialists / medical officers are provided based on needs and suitability as follows:
1.1 Outpatients (Diet Clinic, Pakar 3 / Counselling Room 2, Paediatric Specialist Clinic, Level 2, Block B
Tuesday – Thursday 9.00am to 12.00pm
1.2 Inpatient Ward
All patients are seen within 24 hours (working days) after the being referred.

2. To provide appropriate nutrition education materials according to patients’ needs.
